Seeking Research Participants: The Effects of Brain Education as Evaluated by Brain SPECT Imaging

The IBREA Foundation, in cooperation with the NeuroscienceCenter in Deerfield, Illinois, is currently undertaking research which isinvestigating the effects of Brain Education on brain functioning as measuredby Brain SPECT Imaging.

The research involves Brain Education and Brain WaveVibration training and a Brain SPECT scan and clinical consultation before andafter the training. Participation is strictly confidential and completelyvoluntary.

If you are between the ages of 18 and 65, have no prior DahnYoga or Brain Education training, are not pregnant, and are not currently beingtreated for a neuropsychiatric disorder  and are interested in participating in thisstudy, please click on the link below to read more about the research.

Study Information

Title: The Effects of Brain Education Evaluated with Brain SPECT Imaging

Researcher: Dan Pavel, M.D., Neuroscience Center, Deerfield, Illinois

Sponsor: IBREA Foundation

Purpose of Research: This study seeks to investigate the effects of Brain Education and Brain Wave Vibration training on the brain functioning of individuals measured by Brain SPECT imaging.

Eligibility:

- Adult

- No previous Dahn Yoga or Brain Education training

- Not pregnant

- Answers no to the following two questions:

o Are you currently being seen by a physician for a neuropsychiatric disorder?

o Are you currently on medication for a neuropsychiatric disorder?

Benefits to participants:

Participants in this study will have Brain Education/Brain Wave Vibration training after receiving a clinical consultation with a Neuropsychiatrist and SPECT Brain imaging. There is, however, no guarantee that you will benefit from your participation in this study.

Time or other expectations of participants:

Potential participants will be referred to Steven Best, M.D. a Neuropsychiatrist and Director of the Neuroscience Center. Participants will meet with Dr. Best for 45-50 minutes for a clinical consultation and to confirm that the participant does not need any immediate medical treatment.

Once confirmed, participants will undergo a baseline Brain SPECT with Dr. Pavel. This will take approximately 1 ½ -2 hours and may need to be done over two days. For women, a urine test will be done prior to the Brain SPECTs to confirm that the participant is not pregnant.

Participants will take part in a 12-week training program, including 15-30 minute progress reviews once every two weeks and 70-minute Brain Education/Brain Wave Vibration classes three times a week at a local Dahn Yoga Center, and approximately 15 minutes of Brain Wave Vibration training at home four days a week.

After the training program is completed, participants will return to the Neuroscience Center for a follow-up consultation and second Brain SPECT.

Locations:

Clinical Consultation and Brain SPECT Imaging: Neuroscience Center, Deerfield, Illinois

The Neuroscience Center (www.the-neuroscience-center.com)

The Neuroscience Center in Deerfield, Illinois is a multidisciplinary entity, headed by Steven R. Best M.D., dedicated to the effective diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of Neuropsychiatric diseases. Within the inviting, family-oriented environment of this facility, it brings together a group of different specialists with a common interest in brain health matters.

Dr. Best, Board certified in Psychiatry, subspecialty training in Neuropsychiatry of Children and Adults specializes in disorders of the brain which harm cognitive ability and emotional health.

Brain SPECT, Dan G. Pavel, M.D. (www.pathfinder-brain-spect.net/)

High Definition Brain SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography) is a non-invasive functional brain imaging procedure which generates a color 3D representation of the brain. The colors are proportional to the amount of blood flow to that area of the brain, which is generally proportional to the level of functional activity in that region.

How does it work? A small amount of a compound labeled with a radioisotope (a very small amount of radioactive tracer) is injected intravenously under special surrounding environment conditions. Within 3 minutes this molecule runs throughout the blood stream and is taken up by the brain gray matter. The patient then lies on a table in a comfortable position for 25 min while a triple head gamma camera rotates slowly around their head. The Nuclear Medicine physician (Dr Pavel) will examine the images and provide a detailed written report.

Dr. Pavel has a long experience in Academic Nuclear Medicine, including a one year sabbatical at the National Institutes of Health, in Bethesda, Maryland, dedicated to functional brain imaging evaluation. Dr. Pavel is Director of Pathfinder Brain SPECT at the Neuroscience Center.

Brain Education/Brain Wave Vibration

Brain Education is a method for developing the innate human capacity for health, well-being, optimal achievement, and peacefulness through better self-management of the brain. Brain Education includes physical, emotional, and cognitive exercises, as well as postures, breathing techniques, and guided imagery to stimulate the healthy, dynamic, and productive functioning of the body and brain.

Brain Education classes are typically 70-minutes long and include 4 major segments. The class begins with warm-up and stretching exercises, which increase flexibility, release tension, strengthen the lower body, and increase body awareness. In the second phase, breathing postures are held for relaxation, focus, strengthening, and “energy accumulation”. This is followed by a brief (10 minute) period of Brain Wave Vibration and meditation training to facilitate release of tension from the body and increase “energy awareness”. The class concludes with stretching.

Brain Wave Vibration is one method used in Brain Education training. Using simple, rhythmic physical movements, participants start by moving their head and then move their bodies following their own rhythm. People typically report feeling less stressed and calmer after the training.
