International Brain Education Association (IBREA) became newly associated with the United Nations Department of Public Information

International Brain Education Association (IBREA) will take a role to communicate with UnitedNations and global civil society

On 7 July 2010, IBREA, a non-governmental organization (NGO)was selected as a newly associated NGO that will work for developingcommunication and disseminating UN information worldwide with the UnitedNations Department of Public Information (UN DPI). Since IBREA was founded in 2006, by Ilchi Lee, IBREA hasmade progress on raising public awareness about the Millennium DevelopmentGoals (MDGs) of the United Nations and related global issues through variouscampaigns and activities on national and international levels. As one of the recentglobal campaigns, initiated in 2008 by founder Ilchi Lee, the Earth CitizenMovement (www.iearthcitizen.org) is aimed at supporting education, health andenvironment projects around the world congruent with the MDGs of the UnitedNations and the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) goals. Contributionshave been made to UNEP’s Billion Tree Campaign and the UNICEF’s Prevention ofMother-to-Child Transmission of HIV/AIDS program, and support has been given toUNEP’s Seal-the-Deal campaign. IBREA also creates public awareness throughseveral international conferences and seminars at the United NationsHeadquarters in New York and Geneva related to issues concerning global mentalhealth and children’s education. In addition, IBREA publishes two magazines, ‘Brain’ in Korean and ‘Brain World’ in English.  These publications help to disseminateinformation about the United Nations’ goals and activities. The goals and mission of the International Brain EducationAssociation (IBREA) are directly related to those of the United Nations, whichaim to create a more peaceful, healthy and harmonious world. Through theeducational activities and events, seminars, publications, media outreach,partnerships and sponsorships, IBREA seeks to highlight the programmes andactivities of the United Nations and how IBREA is contributing to theachievement of UN goals. IBREA will continue to deliver information about theUnited Nations to the public and to its partners.

As an NGO associated with UN DPI, representatives are able toattend weekly NGO Briefings, Communication Workshops, the Annual DPI/NGOConference, and Annual Orientation Programme. In addition, the UN DPI NGOResource Center provides services to NGO representatives to be able access UNdocuments and UN system publications.

To associate with UN DPI, the NGO must: respect theprinciples of the Charter of the United Nations; have recognition of nationalor international standing; have a record of collaboration with other parts ofthe UN system; have the means to conduct effective information programmes; showpromise of sustained activity in the future and so on.

Through this association with UN DPI, IBREA plans to reachout to and work more actively with grassroots communities to deliverinformation of the United Nations. By increasing the number of articles relatedto United Nations’ events and activities in all publications, includingmagazines, newsletters, and other publications issued by affiliatedorganizations, IBREA will take an effective role in developing communication.Furthermore, IBREA also plans to expand its website to include many differentlanguages and will continue to provide updates on the website, send out electronicnewsletters, and communicating with members of social networking sites to informeveryone about UN activities and events.
